Microsoft’s popular MSN Messenger, aka Windows Live Messenger, will finally die a complete death on October 31st. The service has been discontinued for a majority of the world, but was kept alive in China due to its popularity. The fifteen year old messaging service will finally be gone forever in favor of Skype.
MSN Messenger was created in 1999 to fight against AOL’s massively popular AIM messaging service, which still exists. As the internet grew and mobile phones became the norm, the desktop focus of MSN Messenger failed to compete with apps like Facebook Messenger and Google Hangouts.
Many users loathed the transition to Skype because of the app’s focus on video calling. Microsoft has overhauled Skype over the last year to accommodate instant messaging users. The company recently fixed an annoying duplicate notification bug.
