Windows Phone 9, which could well be called simply Windows by its release, might get a preview release by January 2015.
According to the site NokiaPowerUser, the next version of Windows Phone will be available for all current Windows Phone 8 devices, although not all the features will work on all devices.
Split-screen multitasking may not be possible on smaller devices, for example. The developer preview should be released in January next year. These are, however, currently unsubstantiated rumors, so they should be taken with a grain of salt.
Windows Phone 9 is part of Microsoft’s ‘Threshold’ project, which is rumored to be unifying the Windows experience across platforms. This is why there’s a strong suspicion that all versions will simply be called Windows eventually. We expect to find out more concrete details on September 30th when Microsoft will hold a special Windows event.
