Microsoft has sent out press invites for an event taking place September 30th in San Francisco. The invite says, “Join us to hear about what’s next for Windows and the enterprise.”
We’ve previously heard that Microsoft was planning to reveal the next version of Windows, code named “Threshold,” at the end of this month and now it’s confirmed. Over the past week, we’ve gotten tons of leaked information from German blogs who got their hands on an early technical preview of the operating system.
We saw the hybrid Start Menu that lets you pin “Modern-UI” apps as well as a completely new notification center and multiple desktops. Today, we learned more about how Microsoft’s voice assistant Cortana will work in the operating system.
There’s a ton of rumors and speculation about what Microsoft will reveal but what we do know is that the next version of Windows will focus heavily on desktop users, a demographic Microsoft seemed to have forgotten about with Windows 8.
There are also leaked internal documents that show Microsoft will finally make good on its promise for one Windows operating system across devices, which could mean the next version of Windows could simply be called “Windows.” The Windows Phone brand may also be killed off and simply called Windows as well, though it’s unclear how the company will differentiate between desktop and mobile operating systems.
Although Microsoft’s press event is in a couple of weeks, we don’t expect the operating system to be available until early 2015.
