The Sims 4 developer Maxis has said that the game will be light-hearted and fun, and while your Sims might be able to die from laughter or anger, they will not be able to do so from depression or other tragic reasons.

In an interview with Polygon, Maxis associate producer Graham Nardone said that death was meant to be ‘comical’ in The Sims, so while some new emotional aspects of the game will be able to cause death, this will not extend to depression, as that would be disrespectful to sufferers or victims of it.

Similarly, The Sims 4 will not feature natural disasters, as it would be too close to real people’s tragedies (whereas people don’t generally die from laughter).

The Sims 4 is due for release in September on Windows, and sometime later for OS X. Maxis isn’t repeating the online mistakes of 2013’s SimCity, and this will be a single player game without any ‘always online’ requirements.
