When Google started tying all of its products to Google+ accounts, some users were unhappy, as it felt unnecessary. Now, when you sign up for a Gmail account, you can opt out of making a Google+ profile.

When you sign up for a Gmail account, you can now say ‘no thanks’ to creating a Google+ profile. That means a Gmail account with no strings attached, but it does mean you’ll miss out on some of the things Google+ allows you to do.

With a Google+ account you can review restaurants, rate apps on Google Play and comment on YouTube videos.

The controversy over Google+ account requirements has mostly passed now. There were rumors earlier this year that the search giant had more or less given up with pushing it as a product. It has not taken off like a new Facebook, and most of its user base exists simply due to users being forced into creating accounts with other Google products. YouTube users were livid about being asked to use Google+ accounts to comment on videos last year. Could we be seeing the beginning of the end for Google+?

It could be that allowing you to sign up for Gmail on its own will convince users who don’t want the whole Google experience.
