One of the most anticipated indie games of 2014, Luftrausers, will be released on March 18th for Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita according to Dutch developers Vlambeer.

Luftrausers is a 2D shoot ’em up, where you take to the skies in an experimental plane to fight the enemy. The game has very retro 8-bit style graphics, but is fast paced and lots of fun. It has a kind of alternate reality World War II feel, and will feature 100 levels and customizable planes, apparently giving you 125 different combinations.

Luftrausers was first released as ‘Luftrauser’, a flash game you can play online here.

Developer Vlambeer also made the excellent Ridiculous Fishing, but have now twice been the victim of cloning. Ridiculous Fishing was cloned for iOS while it was still a flash game, and the clone was very successful, making it hard for the official game to get the success and recognition it deserved.

Last year Luftrausers was also cloned and released on iOS and Android as SkyFar, but Vlambeer had more success that time in getting the game removed from stores. There is no word on when or if Luftrausers will be released on iOS or Android: hardly surprising when you consider the battles Vlambeer has had on those platforms.

We’ll review Luftrausers soon.
