The dangers of illegal file sharing have been highlighted by a fake leaked torrent of GTA V. As Tom’s Guide reports, if you search for ‘GTA V torrent’ you will soon find sites – often linked from YouTube videos – apparently offering a GTA V download.

However, these are scams. The download links lead to sites that will ask you to ‘complete surveys’ as a way to cheat money out of you. The GTA V file that security firm BitDefender uncovered actually installs a modified version of the 2013 game The Cave, which requires you to input a serial code you can only get by completing an online survey, by giving your mobile phone number. This will result in you being charged for premium rate text messages sent by bogus firms. This fake GTA V file also includes a trojan, which can steal personal information from your computer.

If you want to play GTA V, wait for September 17th and buy the official release. Trying to download a pirate copy is inadvisable, both legally and for the health and security of your computer. It’s no surprise that illegal torrents include malware.
