BitTorrent-Sync logoBitTorrent Sync launched in public Alpha two weeks ago but that hasn’t stopped the service from transferring over one petabyte (1024 terabytes) of data already. In a blog post, BitTorrent puts a petabyte of data into perspective by comparing it to the Internet Archive, which houses 10 petabytes of data. The company goes on to say that 70 terabytes of data are anonymously synced every day.

The service lets users build their own cloud service like Dropbox or Google Drive by allowing users to share and sync files with secret codes. The advantage of this is that users can build a private file sharing network where they’re in full control, instead of relying on a company’s servers and security.

BitTorrent takes pride in the security of Sync, highlighting the fact that the company doesn’t have access to any private information. Here’s what they had to say about collecting anonymous usage data:

This is the only information we collect, and we left it open intentionally – so that people could see the data we’re collecting. That way, it can be easily verified that we don’t have access to any private information.

If you haven’t tried BitTorrent Sync already, check out our handy tutorial about how to set up and use the service. The app is available for PC and Mac.
