BlackBerry has updated its Android and iOS apps with free voice calling and topical chat. BBM Channels lets users chat with other BBM users with similar interests and BBM Voice lets users make free internet calls to other BBM users. While free internet calling isn’t anything new, it’s nice to see BBM catching up to some of the competition.

BBM voice callingBBM Channels is a unique feature that connects BBM users with similar interests like fashion, automobiles, and more. “By posting to their channel, channel owners immediately reach their subscribers with a message that can spark discussions,” says BlackBerry. Channels will serve as a platform for brands and companies who wish to connect with their customers without needing to add them to a contact list.

Additionally, BBM also gets location sharing powered by Glympse. This will allow users to provide real-time location data with one or more BBM contacts. Dropbox support is also baked in now, allowing users to easily send files to one another. Recipients can either save files onto their device or to their Dropbox account.

Last but not least, BlackBerry has added over 100 new emoticons, many of which were created from customer submitted ideas.
