It’s been a bad week for Apple. The company’s iCloud service has been under a magnifying glass after an attack on the service exposed nude photos of notable female celebrities. Apple has promised to increase iCloud’s security over the next couple of weeks and today, we see the first step.
In a small change, Apple is now sending email alerts to iCloud users whenever an account is accessed in a web browser, regardless if the browser has been authorized in the past. While this will not prevent attacks, it helps alert the user as soon as possible of any suspicious activity. This method is similar to Facebook’s security, but lacks the detailed information like IP addresses and browsers used to access the site.
With Apple’s big event taking place tomorrow, the company has to prove it’s taking security seriously. iOS 8, the upcoming operating system for iPhones and iPads is rumored to feature mobile payments. Hopefully Apple’s digital wallet will be more secure than its cloud service.
