The developer of The Elder Scrolls Online has temporarily disabled the game’s guild bank feature in North America and Europe. While a reason wasn’t given, it’s likely that it’s a response to a bug that was found called the ‘ESO Item Dupe’.

There are two kinds of Guild in Elder Scrolls Online. NPC (non-player-character) Guilds, which let players access certain quests and skills in the game, and player created Guilds, which allow players to organize themselves into persistent social groups so they can work together easily.

In the latter, when a Guild reaches ten members, it can open a Guild Bank. Banks allow players to store gold and items, but the ‘Item Dupe’ bug meant that players could duplicate items in their banks as much as they liked, making items essentially worthless.

According to Reddit contributor Mistress-Rarity, billions of gold and rare materials have been flooding the game due to the bug, and other players are also complaining that Zenimax have failed to fix many of the bugs reported during the beta testing phase. A new patch will fix the duplicating bug, but it’s unclear what Zenimax will do about all the unfairly gotten gold and items that already exist.

We’ll update this story as soon as Zenimax announce more details, or bring the Guild Bank feature back online.

Update:

Zenimax released a statement explaining that they discovered the bug, and players who were taking advantage of it:

“Yesterday, we identified an item duping bug in ESO that some players chose to exploit. We acted quickly, and have since fixed the issue. We have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to abusing exploitable bugs, and those who were found doing so have has their game account permanently banned.”

Players who feel they have been unfairly banned can appeal on the Elder Scrolls Online Support site.
