In a blog post on his website Supersite for Windows, Windows expert Paul Thurrot explains Microsoft’s plans for the upcoming BUILD developer’s conference in April 2014, where the software giant plans to announce Windows 9, until now code named Windows Threshold. The next major update to the operating system will hopefully help users forget the painful release of Windows 8.

Thurrot reports that Microsoft is continuing the planned update for Windows 8.1, likely to appear around the same time as the conference. According to sources, we’ll get the first details about the mysterious Windows Threshold at the BUILD conference, along with news about Windows Phone and Xbox.

Windows 9 to be released April 2015

Microsoft has yet to begin developing Windows 9, but sources in the company say that the operating system must be “everything that Windows 8 is not”. The relative failure of Windows 8 has led Microsoft to acknowledge its mistakes and promise to make something more user-friendly with Windows 9. Among other things, Microsoft is hoping to make improvements to the ‘Metro’ design language with a so-called ‘Metro 2.0’ update.

The launch of Windows 9 is planned for April 2015.
