Microsoft is still playing catch up to its cloud storage competitors like Google Drive and Dropbox. Today, they close the gap a little more by enabling offline file support for SkyDrive files. SkyDrive for Windows 8.1 will bring a “Make offline” button to the operating system’s contextual menu. Select the files you want to download to your device to be able to edit offline. Files will be synced once you reconnect to the internet.

Offline files will show up along side all of your other SkyDrive files but unavailable files will be grayed out.  This makes it easy to see all of your files in your SkyDrive so you’re not managing two different looking file libraries. Offline SkyDrive files will be fully indexed by Windows 8.1 so they will show up in the search results.
