The Windows 8.1 2014 update was briefly available to download for anyone, via direct links or a process involving changing the Windows registry, discovered through Microsoft’s Windows Update service. This has now been blocked by Microsoft, and the official release is still expected in April.

From the leak we know the update is around 760MB, and it includes the new ‘desktop friendly’ features for mouse users that Microsoft has added, in response to user feedback. Windows 8 apps have a new title bar allowing you to close, minimize or snap apps, and you’ll be able to see the desktop taskbar over apps if you wish. The update will also boot straight to the classic desktop on non-touch devices.

There’s still time for Microsoft to make changes to the update before April, and while you can find it in unofficial channels online, it’s safer to wait for the official release, which is rumored to be on April 8th.

We expect Microsoft to officially present details of the Windows 8.1 2014 update at its Build Developer Conference at the start of April.
