It’s not just you. Messaging app WhatsApp has been down for the past couple of hours. The company took to Twitter to confirm the outage. “sorry we currently experiencing server issues. we hope to be back up and recovered shortly,” says the WhatsApp Status Twitter account.

Users trying to send messages in WhatsApp will find their messages stuck with the “sending” clock icon. The app just hangs at the “connecting” alert.
Although Facebook’s $16 billion purchase of WhatsApp is still pending, it hasn’t stopped users from blaming the social network for the outage.
Meanwhile, Telegram, the popular alternative to WhatsApp, has been receiving 100 new registrations every second, according to their Twitter account. Telegram is having server issues itself as tons of users flood to register for the service.
This is crazy. We'are getting 100 new registrations every second. Trying hard to prevent connection issues in Europe.

It’s rare to see WhatsApp experiencing downtime as the service has been solid in the past. With users already worried about Facebook ruining the messaging service, this outage might just push some users over the edge to leave WhatsApp.
Update 3:00PM PST: And with that, WhatsApp is back up and running.
WhatsApp service has been restored. We are so sorry for the downtime…
