The Kickstarter-funded VLC for Windows 8 is getting its first update today, which improves stability and a problem some people had with the media player crashing when started.

Released last week, VLC for Windows 8 is an alternative to Windows Media Player 12 on the new ‘modern interface’. According to the developers, it has been downloaded 38,000 times so far. This is a reasonable number, but pales in comparison to the traditional desktop version, which is one of the most downloaded programs in the world (it is often the number one app on Softonic).

The next update to VLC for Windows 8 will be submitted next week. The app is still a beta, and has plenty of bugs to iron out before it reaches the magic ‘version 1.0’. The developers say that having to develop for Windows 8 and 8.1 actually makes the app less stable – but they have to develop for both as many Windows 8 users are yet to update their OS. VLC for Windows 8 is still slower than the classic version, and some of VLC’s best features, like easy use of subtitles, are not well implemented yet.
