Popular alternative media player VLC for iOS has been updated to version 2.3.0, with new features and a raft of fixes. VLC allows you to play most media files in iOS, unlike the native apps which are very limited in terms of format support.

VLC for iOS 2.3.0 adds the ability to create folders for your media, so it’s easier to organize your files. There is also new support for password protected HTTP streams, and you can show subtitles in bold too. This new version also allows you to disable gesture controls, and can now play m4b, caf, oma, w64 audio and mxg video files.

The most important fixes are playback pausing when headphones are removed (as is the case with the native media players), and you can now see playback controls in the iOS lock screen and multi-tasking views.

VLC for iOS is getting progressively better, but it’s not quite up to the high standards as the well respected Windows and OS X versions.
