Tumblr has released an emergency security update for iOS users for both the iPhone and iPad versions of the app. According to Tumblr, a bug was found that ‘in certain circumstances’ passwords could be compromised. If you use these apps, you should update immediately.

As a precaution, you should also change your password on Tumblr, and any other service that you use the same password. Tumblr has not provided much information about the security update, so we don’t know how the exploit worked, or how many people may have been affected.

More and more services are introducing a two-step verification system, which makes you much better protected against attacks and keeps passwords safer. Twitter, Microsoft and Google have gone down this route, but Tumblr has not yet followed suite. It is never advisable to use the same password for multiple services, and it’s always a good idea to regularly change them.

Tumblr recommends using aaps like 1Password or LastPass to help you manage your passwords across different services.
