Spotify is closing its MP3 store, and users have until the end of 2013 to download any music they bought. It has been closed for new purchases since January 2013, but is now going to be shut completely.

Spotify will now focus on its premium service, and upcoming free mobile service. Buying MP3s was never very popular with Spotify users – and it seems to run counter to the basic concept of Spotify, which is a service allowing you to stream any music from anywhere. Allowing people to buy MP3s doesn’t really add to that.

Spotify is notifying users that they must download any MP3s they bought before January 1st, 2014, or lose them forever. Mainstream music apps are increasingly focused on streaming music instead of MP3s, as we have seen with iTunes Radio, Google Play and Xbox Music. Are we seeing MP3s, or downloaded music in general becoming a more niche market?

If you have Spotify downloads, make sure to grab them before January 1st, and make any backups you want, as you won’t be able to download them again after that date.
