Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) will release a free to play online zombie survival game, which will be available in just over a month on PC. It’s called H1Z1, and while it might look similar to DayZ or RUST, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about it.

With a world possibly even bigger than online FPS Planetside 2, H1Z1 will allow thousands of players to join at the same time. Speaking on Reddit, President of SOE John Smedley explained how the game would be different to other zombie survival games:

“First off, it’s a persistent MMO that can hold thousands of players on servers we host (yes there will be multiple servers with very different rule sets). Why is that a good thing? It means a thriving economy (oh yes… there’s trading). It also means you have potential allies in the all-out war on the Infected… and many an enemy as well.

We want our players to make Woodbury from The Walking Dead if they want to. Or take over a prison. Or fix an old car so you and your friends (yeah we have multiplayer vehicles) can run zombies and players over mercilessly, and revel in the sheer delight of hearing a zombie scream as you light it on fire, or craft a gun to take down your friends and enemies alike. Our goal here is to provide emergent gameplay that will allow our players to make the world their own the way they want to.”

SEO’s Planetside 2 is an excellent massively multiplayer FPS, and proves that the company has what it takes to run a great online game. Smedley announced on Twitter that we’ll get to see a livestream of H1Z1, along with screenshots and videos.

H1Z1 will initially be released on PC, with a PlayStation 4 version coming later.
