The next versions of Windows are codenamed ‘Threshold’, due in 2015 and will bring the three Microsoft platforms even closer together (Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One).

This rumor comes from Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet, and her sources say that the name Threshold has been mentioned in internal emails. Threshold is not the name of a single version of Windows, but rather a range of developments being pushed to each of Microsoft’s platforms.

All three share a common Windows NT core, but beyond that Microsoft wants a more similar experience overall. This could mean common office apps, a single app store, greater Bing integration and more.

This is the second Microsoft codename taken from the iconic Halo games series. Its version of Apple’s Siri is codenamed Cortana, also taken from the game.

Before any of these Threshold projects, the imaginatively titled ‘Windows 8.1 Update 1’ will be released sometime in Spring 2014.
