Google already tracks some user behavior on the web and on its Android operating system but the company could begin rewarding participants who sign up for deeper monitoring. Engadget reports that Google is working on a project known as “Mobile Meter,” which will allow the company to track usage statistics on both Android and iOS. Mobile Meter will allegedly anonymize data to protect user privacy.
Android already asks users during setup if they would like to send anonymous usage data to Google but Mobile Meter will apparently dig deeper than what Android already provides. Usage statistics from Mobile Meter will detail which apps you use, how long you use them, and perhaps how you use them. It’s interesting that Google is rumored to be bringing Mobile Meter to iOS as well, allowing the company to gain insight into its competitor’s operating system.

Since this is all speculation, Google has declined to comment on Mobile Meter. There’s little information as to what incentives users will receive by opting into deep tracking nor is there any information about how Google will be allowed to track usage on iOS.
