The next major update to Android, called Android L or Lollipop, is likely to be available on November 1st for Nexus devices, and on others in the following weeks and months.

While we know Android L is a major update, and despite a developer release arriving over the summer, there are some big details missing. Notably, we don’t know its name, although Lollipop seems most likely (Licorice and Lemon Meringue pie).

The biggest change it that there’s a brand new design that runs through its menus and apps. Called Material Design, it’s a new, flat look for Android, and is intended to make your experience on all Android devices the same. You can get a taste of Material Design by going to the Play Store on an Android device, as it’s already been updated with the new look, as has the Google+ app.

We expect new Nexus devices running Android L to be announced this week, and it should be available for other compatible devices by November 1st. As always with Android, many users will have to wait for their carriers and device manufacturers to adapt it. First manufacturers will adapt it to their devices, then send that to carriers, who will deliver it to you. This process takes time, and in some cases there is little motivation for companies to do this at all, especially with older devices.
