Rovio’s Angry Birds was one of the original success stories for gaming apps on mobile devices. The numerous variations from the original title spawned a flood of clones that used the same core gameplay, modified it to be similar or added small tweaks.

After Angry Birds Space, there was a teaser for Rovio’s new game, Amazing Alex. Released today for iOS and Android, Rovio uses the same level system that is in Angry Birds, but introduces an entirely new gameplay system for their game.

Amazing Alex is a puzzle game that requires you to complete Rube Goldberg-style puzzles. Adding different parts like shelves or scissors in the early levels to more complicated additions later on, Amazing Alex presents a problem and you have to find the solution. While Angry Birds was an easier trial-and-error game throughout all the different versions, Amazing Alex requires creativity and planning to solve each level.

There is still trial-and-error, but each mistake gives you a clue to solve a level, rather than Angry Birds’ haphazard and minute adjustments to fire a particular bird. It’s great to see Rovio moving in a different direction. Amazing Alex is the perfect game for kids and adults who seek a challenge.

Amazing Alex is on Android in a free trial, full version, and HD while iOS has separate iPhone and iPad versions.
