playstation-plus-headerSony first introduced auto-updates with its PlayStation 3 console but the feature required a PlayStation Plus subscription. Many assumed that this would carry over to the recently announced PlayStation 4 but it’s been revealed that auto-updates won’t require the yearly Plus subscription. Another nice revelation about the console is that social features, movie streaming, and TV services on the PS4 won’t require Plus either.

On the other hand, multiplayer will still require a $50 per year subscription to PlayStation Plus. Sony has given developers more power to decide whether or not a game would require a subscription for multiplayer. For example, a free-to-play game can choose to allow online multiplayer without a Plus subscription.

In contrast, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One require users to sign up for an Xbox Live Gold account ($59 per year) to use Netflix, Twitter, and playing online.
