Epic Games has opened a pre-alpha testing phase of Unreal Tournament, the upcoming free to play competitive shooter, for anyone who registers. Until now, it’s only been available to developers. Once registered on the game’s forum, you can download the game free for Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux.

A new Unreal Tournament was announced in May this year, and it looks like its using a free to play model similar to Valve’s Team Fortress 2. This means that premium features will be available, but it won’t be ‘play to win’ – paying for anything shouldn’t give you an unfair advantage over other players.

The pre-alpha of Unreal Tournament is still in very early stages of development; its graphics and interface are just placeholders at the moment. While the fast paced gameplay is recognizably Unreal Tournament, we won’t know how good it will look for a while yet.
