opera for android combinedOpera’s browser for Android is stable enough that it has shed its beta label. The WebKit-based browser now has to overcome Google Chrome’s domination on Android devices.

Opera for Android was first shown off at Mobile World Congress back in February. The browser is completely different from Opera’s previous Android browser, Opera Mini. While Opera Mini felt like a stripped-down version of a browser, Opera for Android feels like a complete, full-featured browser that can contend with Chrome. One similarity between the two Opera browser is their ability to compress web pages, speeding up the browser speed while minimizing data use. This is handy for users who have restrictive data caps.

Opera made a dramatic move abandoning its Presto framework in favor of the WebKit engine. Now the company has come out and said it would support Google’s fork of WebKit named “Blink” when it becomes available. Blink is basically a streamlined version of WebKit with a lot of unnecessary code removed.

As of the writing of this article, Opera for Android has between 10-50 million installs and over 350,000 reviews averaging 4.4 out of 5.
