Support for Windows XP will still be discontinued after April 8th, 2014 but Microsoft has announced it will help keep millions of XP users safe by providing updates to its security products until July 14th, 2015. Microsoft is pushing hard for businesses and users to move off the 12 year old operating system but is struggling to move Windows XP users to Windows 7 and 8. Windows XP still makes up 31% of the desktop computing market share so millions could be left vulnerable to attack after Microsoft pulls support.
Microsoft security products like Security Essentials, System Center Endpoint Protection, Forefront Client Security, and Forefront Endpoint Protection will still receive regular updates after XP’s discontinuation.
Mozilla, Opera, and Google have all promised to provide extended support for their browsers on Windows XP, even after its discontinuation date on April 8th of this year. This is good news for XP users as many attacks come from browser-based exploits. Ironically, Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer browser will go unsupported after April 8th.
