Skype and MessengerWe already knew that Microsoft had plans to discontinue Windows Live Messenger but today we have a solid deadline. On March 15th, 2013 Windows Live Messenger will be discontinued, forcing all current users (except for those in mainland China) to use Skype instead. This is an aggressive move from Microsoft, a company that's known for supporting legacy products.

Not to worry though, Skype is a solid instant messaging program. While Skype is more known for it's excellent video chat features, Skype and Windows Live Messenger users can chat with one another in the latest versions of Skype. Skype users can integrate their Microsoft IDs into the program to import all of their contacts from the service. This integration has been implemented for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

When March 15th rolls around, Windows Live Messenger users will be greeted with a banner notification alerting them to install Skype. Clicking on the banner will also uninstall Messenger, making the transition as simple as possible.

I'm not switching to Skype, now I'll use permanently Trillian instead, which I was already using to chat with those with no MSN. Skype is not a solid instant messaging program and misses tons of features other instant messaging program have. Beside, I cannot stand Sype UI.

If Whatsapp heave a Desktop version that do not need to heave a phone line, I definitely use it instead of the less friendly Skype, wich I dont like

I like Skype, but I had some custom emoticons on messenger and while not important, I would like to use them on Skype, but apparently I can't.

I tried to merge, I pressed the link on my Msn, now I have lost everything, I cannot retrieve my windows live messenger contacts. It was my only way to communicate with a lot of people. Why did you have to change things, it was easy to use. I am not at all happy.

First thing after merging my accounts, a bunch of unknown weirdos started to message me. Best part of all: Skype does not have a 'block' feature for non-Skype contacts.

This means that you will be vulnerable to any hotmail, yahoo, etc. troll/hacker/scam accounts upon merging. And since we are all forced to use Skype anyway, this is goodbye, I'll look for alternatives.

Dumb move seriously, Microsoft/Skype. Good job.

I AM SO NOT HAPPY WITH THIS! I "merged" skype with msn and now I can't get onto msn messenger to chat anymore...and to get to my hotmail account,I have to log into yahoo messenger,go into yahoo mail, then from there, type in the URL for hotmail just to get my messages!...why in the world did you get the "bright"(note sarcasm here) idea to get rid of msn messenger???????this is so unfair!...especially since im starting to work now,and some of my work consists of video conferencing, and on skype I cannot get my mic to work properly,no matter what I try....and I had hardly no problems using my mic/webcam on msn messenger.

Unless they add the e-mail message feature with the inbox, optional alerts and the likes, I have only one thing to say: I HATE SKYPE! When I was forced to use this program instead, I expected it to have Live Messenger features, along with its own Skype quirks. You don't go forcing freshwater fish into a tank of seawater.

Hate skype... Microsoft at least give us the choice of what we prefer to have instead of choosing for us....Bad Move.. Can't even get my hotmail account e.mails

I've really tried to like Skype. But there is no notification when someone is online, and many times it does not update, and I see conversations from days ago. Please, at least give us the option of choosing. MS.... bad move this Skype, since it is less user friendly than MSN.
