Microsoft has recreated its first website to mark its 20th anniversary on the internet. You can visit the site here, but there are some differences to the original, as I explain below. It was re-made by Paravel, the team that worked with Microsoft to design its latest homepage.

This 1994 homepage works as a portal for Microsoft today – all the links lead you to current pages about Microsoft careers and news. You can’t explore the 1994 internet from this page, unfortunately.

The Paravel designers note that ‘researching and working on replicating the original version of the Microsoft.com homepage from 20 years ago after helping redesign the modern counterpart fills you with some awe, respect, and inspiration for how far the web has come in 20 short years. It’s a big story with many turns and it makes you thankful for all the people (and companies) who have sought to make the web great.’

Just two years later, Microsoft’s homepage had become something much more modern, and while its certainly outdated, it looks more like the internet we know today. The 1994 homepage is very unusual by today’s standards!
