Two weeks ago, Microsoft announced that Windows 8.1 would be released to everyone at the same time, including developers part of Microsoft’s Developer Network and IT professionals part of TechNet. This was the first time developers and systems administrators wouldn’t get a Windows update before launch. Microsoft has received enough backlash that it has decided to release Windows 8.1 on MSDN and TechNet today.

Here’s what Microsoft had to say in a blog post on MSDN:

Microsoft concedes, Windows 8.1 now available on MSDN and TechNet

“We heard from you that our decision to not initially release Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM bits was a big challenge for our developer partners as they’re readying new Windows 8.1 apps and for IT professionals who are preparing for Windows 8.1 deployments. We’ve listened, we value your partnership, and we are adjusting based on your feedback.”

What’s interesting is that Microsoft has released Windows 8.1 to manufacturers but the company admits it isn’t completely finished with the operating system. The company is still working on a few first-party apps and bug fixes before the October 18th release date for Windows 8.1. While it’s natural for a company to release update for an operating system after launch, Windows 8.1 appears to be rushed, perhaps trying to beat Apple’s release of OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
