The developer behind hit mobile game Candy Crush Saga has dropped its US trademark filing for the word “Candy.” King filed for and received a trademark for “Candy” in the EU last year, which upset many mobile game developers with candy-themed apps. Developers even banded together for a “Candy Jam” where tons of candy-themed joke apps were submitted to the App Store.

King responded with a statement stating that their trademark for “Candy Crusher” is enough for protecting Candy Crush Saga in the US market. The statement also goes on to say, “This does not affect our E.U. trademark for Candy and we continue to take all appropriate steps to protect our IP.”

And protect their IP, it will. King is currently in litigation with Stoic Studios for its The Banner Saga game, which King claims uses the word “saga” without credit. How a player would confuse The Banner Saga with Candy Crush Saga, I don’t know. One is a Norse inspired role-playing game while the other is a whimsical puzzle game.
