Apple promised to increase iCloud’s security following the hack that exposed nude celebrity photos. The company made good on its promise today by rolling out two-factor authentication again. The feature briefly appeared in June but disappeared for unknown reasons.
Now when you try to log into your iCloud, you’ll have to provide a phone number for Apple to text you verification codes. While it’s easy for hackers to gain access to online accounts, it’s much harder for a hacker to steal or hack into your phone. By requiring a second layer of verification, Apple is making sure it’s you that’s trying to access your iCloud.
The two step verification gets sent as a four number code via text message. Enter the number on the site and you’ll get access to your account. You’ll also receive an email alerting you someone accessed your iCloud account. This ensures you are aware of any and all activity on your iCloud.
But what happens if your phone gets lost or broken? You can specify another phone number to receive the verification code. It’s a good idea to chose someone you trust won’t snoop on your iCloud.
Apple still has a lot of work to do to lock down iCloud and it’ll have to do it quickly if the company wants customers to start using its digital wallet payment system, Apple Pay.
