Blizzard announced a completely new game called Heroes of the Storm, a multiplayer online battle area (MOBA) which pay homage to past Blizzard games. The most exciting thing about Heroes of the Storm is that you can play as every Blizzard hero created in the company’s 20 year history. Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades and Raynor from StarCraft II are just a couple of the heroes featured in the game.

The company began development of this game back in 2010 under the name Blizzard All-Stars but changed the name to Heroes of the Storm last month. It originally was designed as a custom version of StarCraft II.

Its developers are hoping to keep players coming back to Heroes of the Storm by providing quick matches that last between 15-20 minutes. One of the most frustrating things about MOBAs is how long matches can fatigue a player. The lack of a fleshed out story shows that Blizzard isn’t taking itself too seriously, since the game combines so many characters from different universes.

Starting today, Blizzard fans can sign up to be a part of the beta for Heroes of the Storm at this link. There’s no release date for the game yet but we should hear more as the beta program takes off. What we do know is that the game will be free-to-play and will be supported by in-game purchases.

In a space dominated by free-to-play MOBAs, Blizzard’s famous characters and long history could just be enough to lure players from other MOBAs like League of Legends or Strife.
