one_today_iconGoogle shows its philanthropic side with the One Today app, which lets users donate $1 to various nonprofit organizations. The app is available for Android, iPhone, Blackberry, and Windows Phone but users will have to be invited to join. The aim of One Today is to get users to discover organizations to donate small amounts of money to. There’s also a social aspect to the app, which lets you see which friends have donated to which organizations so you can help chip in. Users will also be able to share projects through various social networks.

The interesting thing about One Today is the fact that you can only donate $1 per day per project. Google has set up this limitation specifically to encourage people to share projects to match donations and to raise awareness of the campaign. Google also takes no cut of the proceeds so nonprofits will get the full value of the donation, minus 1.9% for the credit card processing fee.

Payments will be handled through Google Wallet, which supports any type of credit card. Balances will be added periodically so you’re not billed for each individual transaction. If you’re in the US, donations are tax deductible and Google Wallet will work as a donation receipt. If you donate more than $250, Google will send you a tax deduction certificate at the end of the year.
