Lead Designer for Search at Google, Jon Wiley announced a big change to the look of Google Search: links will no longer be underlined. Links have been underlined ever since Google was started as a research project in 1996, and quickly became the standard way to mark text as a link.

Writing on Google+, Wiley explained that changes made to mobile search last year are now being brought over to desktop searches. The idea is to make results look cleaner, so titles have larger fonts, underlines have gone to make them look cleaner, and line heights have been evened out. As well as being easier to read, these changes also mean everyone will have a similar search experience with Google regardless of the device they are searching from.

As well as removing underlines, Google has also decided against big banner ads. It had been testing them – big high quality ads across the top of search results – but the project has been stopped. While Google is a huge advertising company, the big adverts seemed too intrusive and made search results less clean.
