Google’s Amazon Video competitor now lets you download your purchased movies and TV shows to watch offline. While Android users have had offline access since the beginning, iOS are now finally joining them nine months later.
While the ability to download and watch videos offline is a welcomed feature, Google Play Movies and TV for iOS is still missing a critical feature: the ability to purchase video in the app. Since Google doesn’t want to give Apple a 30% cut of its profits, the company is leaving out the ability to buy or rent video. Instead, iOS users can go to the Google Play site to buy content.
Google isn’t the only company to do this; both Amazon and ComiXology disabled purchasing content inside their iOS apps to avoid giving Apple part of their profits. This fight creates an inelegant experience and annoyance for users but it’s the cost of providing software on a competitor’s platform.
