Google Drive app now requires Docs and Sheets apps for editing

Last week, Google separated Docs and Sheets from the Google Drive app. As it turns out, you’ll need to download the new apps if you want to edit documents and spreadsheets.

Google Drive is now a file storage app that lets you access your files from the cloud but doesn’t allow editing. It may seem strange for Google to separate Drive into more apps but it actually makes sense. By having separate apps, Google can quickly update each app and make each app more responsive.

Google began prompting users to download the new Docs and Sheets apps for editing late last week. However, Drive still allows users to view their files.

Google Slides is still missing so you can’t create presentations on the go just yet. Once Google releases Slides, Google’s productivity suite will be ready to battle Microsoft’s mobile Office apps.
