Leaked screenshots of an alleged update to Gmail for Android show a radical redesign with options to pin and snooze email.

If you have Google’s inbox categories enabled, sections for finance, travel, purchases, and social will show up in the menu. The update also features redesigned iconography and colors to make identifying sections easier.

New is the “Upcoming” tab, which allows you to snooze email so you can be reminded to respond later. We’ve seen this feature in Mailbox, which was acquired by Dropbox.

There’s also a new “Pin” toggle at the top of the app. This looks to be a replacement for Google’s current “star” system. Starred emails appear in a separate folder, making them hard to get to. With pinned email, you can toggle them on and off to bring up important messages.

These screenshots could be from a leaked internal experiment so they may never see the light of day. Email hasn’t evolved much since its creation so it’s nice to see Google trying to improve it. Hopefully we’ll see these features come to Gmail soon.
