World of Warplanes, a free to play aerial massively multiplayer online (MMO) for Windows PC is released today. This follows a long beta testing phase that included 4.5 million players.

World of Warplanes comes from the same team that brought us the massively popular World of Tanks, and the premise here is the same. It’s a ‘historical’ game, featuring over 100 Word War II era planes from five nations: USA, USSR, Germany, Great Britain and Japan.

In the game, you take to the air for 15 minute dogfighting battles between two teams of fighter planes. There are lots of structural similarities with World of Tanks, in terms of how you level up and get new planes to fly. Developer Wargaming say that just like in World of Tanks, World of Warplanes will be continuously updated with new planes, nations and game modes.

The launch of World of Warplanes also sees the introduction of Unified Premium Account, so if you buy a premium account in World of Tanks, it will be valid in World of Warplanes, and vice versa.
