Mozilla is to release a touch friendly, Windows 8-style version of Firefox this December, following the Windows 8.1 update from Microsoft.

Mozilla has taken its time with Firefox for Windows 8’s modern UI. Chrome has been available since June 2012, and Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer 11 will ship with 8.1, promising to build on the already well received 10.

A preview of ‘Metro Firefox’ has been available since last October, and it is being developed in parallel with Firefox 26. Currently it’s scheduled for release on December 10th, but there have already been development delays, so that could easily be pushed back to 2014.

The current version of Firefox is 23. Firefox 25, scheduled for release in October, will see some big design changes, bringing the look and feel of Firefox much closer to Chrome. It will feature a ‘unified search and address bar’, as seen in IE 10 and Chrome.
