New look curved tabs, a big new back button and other changes are coming with Firefox 25 which looks like being the biggest refresh of Mozilla’s browser since version 4.

The current stable release is Firefox 21, but 25 should be released by October. The latest ‘nightly builds’ – the freshest downloadable test versions –  are currently at version 24. You can see below that the difference between 24 and the proposed 25 is pretty big.

Mozilla lists these changes coming to to Firefox 25:

  • Curved tabs
  • Remove tab affordance from background tabs (you will only see the text, not the border)
  • Separate Bookmark Star from LocationBar and merge with Bookmarks Menu item
  • Updated Panel Based Application Menu and Customization Mode
  • Unify the interface to include consistent border-radii, dimensions, spacing, margins, icons and color palette
  • Refine all aspects of the existing UI
  • Update In-Content UI Styles

The design proposals also show a unified search and address bar, which would bring Firefox a step closer to Chrome visually.

Another new development is a new ‘Panel Menu‘, which evolves Firefox 4’s unified menu into a customizable and more attractive set of buttons. It’s a radical departure from the current menu, as you can see.
