Facebook has unveiled new options for designating your gender. Now users have ten gender options ranging from the traditional “male” and “female” to “transgender” and “intersex.” The company has worked closely with LGBT groups to help define the new gender options. Users will also be able to control who sees their gender and even has an option to set which pronoun you prefer to be called by.

To celebrate the introduction of new gender options, Facebook has draped rainbow-colored flags at their Menlo Park headquarters. “When you come to Facebook to connect with the people, causes, and organizations you care about, we want you to feel comfortable being your true, authentic self,” writes Facebook on their Diversity page.

While the new gender options give users more options for self expression, they’re not adopted system wide. As a commenter notes, There is still no option to identify my relationship with my queer child without selecting Son or Daughter.”
