Facebook throws caution to the wind as the social networking site now allows users under the age of 18 to post publicly for the first time. The company’s reasoning is that teenagers are “among the savviest people using social media” and that “only a small fraction of teens using Facebook might choose to post publicly. The main reason Facebook is opening up public sharing to teens is because every other social networking site allows it. Facebook doesn’t want its teenage users to flock to competing sites.

While teens will be able to post publicly, Facebook is making sure that public sharing transparent. As with adult profiles, teens will now have a notification in the status update window alerting them to who they’re sharing with. Clicking on the drop down menu will reveal the option to post something publicly, accompanied by a warning message. “We take the safety of teens very seriously, so they will see an extra reminder before they can share publicly,” says Facebook.

Teens now also have the power to turn on the “Follow” feature, which lets strangers follow and see their public posts without them having to be friends first.
