It was just a couple of weeks ago that Facebook Messenger updated with voice messaging but today, Facebook activated free voice calling in its Messenger app for iOS. This feature is only available in the United States and Canada for iPhone users at the moment. There’s no mention of when this update will land for Android users. Voice calling first rolled out for Canadian users as a test two weeks ago so updates should be happening fairly quickly.

Voice calling will work similarly to services like Skype, Viber, and KakaoTalk. Instead of using your voice minutes to make calls, you can connect over your cellular data network to use data instead. Those with unlimited data will find this extremely useful.

For this to work you and your friend must be running version 2.1 or later of Facebook Messenger.
