Facebook Messenger for Android 4.0 is out now, and follows the last iOS update by allowing you to put your friends in groups, and put them in a Groups tab. It also introduces voice calls, which can be made over WiFi or mobile networks, to any users who have the latest version of the app installed.

The group tab means you can quickly send messages to your different circles of friends, which is a neat feature. Now on Android, you can pin any group conversation to your home screen, which will open the chat head conversation without having to open the Messenger app itself.

These are useful additions to the Android Facebook Messenger app, but offer no clues to the social network’s plans for WhatsApp, which it bought for $19 billion. While WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum has stressed that the messenger app’s data will not be used by Facebook, it’s hard to imagine that there will be no integration with Facebook eventually.
