Facebook was born 10 years ago today, as thefacebook.com, with an investment of $1000. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg along with Eduardo Saverin , Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Its simplicity was stark contrast to the crazy world of MySpace, and it quickly gained popularity outside its Harvard origins.

From dethroning MySpace to the explosion of Facebook games like FarmVille, the introduction of the Timeline, and the apparently bottomless well of scams that circulate around the social network, Facebook has rarely been out of the news. We’ve left, and come back. It has become one of the most important ways of keeping in touch with family and friends, and is increasingly popular as a way to share news stories.

At this month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Mark Zuckerberg is the keynote speaker, so we can look forward to hearing his vision for Facebook’s future then. For now, it’s enough to note what a big effect on our lives Facebook has had, and how much has changed over the last ten years.
