Android evolutionAnonymous sources have told tech blog VR-Zone that Android 5.0, code named Key Lime Pie, is coming in late October. The alleged announcement is rumored to also debut the much anticipated Nexus device. This rumor makes sense as Google has debuted a new version of Android alongside a device release like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 back in November of 2011.

It’s speculated that Google held off on introducing a new version of Android during it’s I/O conference this year to let phone manufacturers catch up with updating their devices to the latest version of Android, version 4.2.2. Instead, Google has updated it’s core applications like Gmail, Calendar, and Hangouts to provide a unified Android experience across devices.

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is reportedly going to be a heavily streamlined version of Android, built to run on less powerful hardware. Devices would only need to have 512MB of RAM and a single core processor to run Android 5.0, supposedly. Google already did this once with its “Project Butter” that debuted in Android 4.1 to get rid of the notorious lag of previous versions of Android.

When Android 5.0 does get released, it’ll take some more time for carriers to update their handsets with the latest operating system. For those who don’t want to wait for updates, getting a Nexus branded device or an HTC One/Galaxy S4 running stock Android is your only choice for now.
