Incognito mode has become standard in most browsers, for use when someone doesn’t want browsing history or data saved. Now Steve Kondik, of the CyanogenMod Team has announced a ‘Run in Incognito Mode‘ for apps. It is a way to stop apps accessing any of your personal data on your Android device.

When you run an app in Incognito Mode, the app will not be able to access your contacts, messages, call logs or other data. The App will also be unable to access GPS data unless you turn Incognito mode off.

This feature is focused on controlling personal data – Kondik states that it will not include related functions like ad-blocking or ‘device info spoofing‘ (giving an app false information). Incognito Mode for apps is ‘coming soon’, and we’ll certainly check it out when it’s released.

CyanogenMod is an open source firmware for Android devices, which you can install to give your phone or tablet some new features. It’s very popular: the CyanogenMod claim it has over five million installs. The current version is 10, and 10.1 is very close to release.
