As we reported earlier this month, ads have been introduced to Snapchat, appearing in its Recent Updates for users in the US. The move was announced in a very honest post on Snapchat’s blog.
Ads on Snapchat “will appear in your Recent Updates from time to time, and you can choose if you want to watch [them]”. The company promises they won’s put advertisements in your personal communications. The ads in the Recent Updates feed will disappear after 24 hours, much like Stories do. The first ad was for the horror movie Ouija.

Writing frankly, Snapchat explains that it’s bringing ads to make money to support the service. Rumors of companies trying to buy the ephemeral chat app have been circulating for over a year. In 2013, Google was rumored to have offered $4 billion for Snapchat, and there’s currently speculation that Yahoo! wants to make an investment in the firm that would value it at $10 billion.
